In this retelling of an Anancy favorite, Anancy and Dog go looking for land; and we find out that not everything is for everybody, and why Dog is always looking.
By and by, Brer Anancy and Brer Dog ended up deciding that they wanted to go into planting. So they went out in search of good land. And, eventually, Anancy and Dog came across a nice piece of land.
Now, Anancy fell in love with the spot right away. He said to Dog that he remembered when he was a little boy that his father planted yams on land exactly like it. And Anancy went on to say that he thought that the land that they found might even be the very same spot that he remembered from when he was a boy.
“And the yams did bear,” Anancy said.
“How big they bear, Anancy?” Dog said. “How big!? How big!?”
“Big, Dog, big!” Anancy said. “The yams bear big.”
And with this kind of talk from Anancy, it didn’t take Dog long to say that the land was the perfect piece of land as far as he Dog was concerned, too.
And Anancy kept going on and on. “Brar Dog, the yams bear big. Big! Big, man! They bear big like me leg!”
“But hold, on, Anancy,” Dog said. “Hold on. Hold on. They bear big like you leg. But, Anancy, you leg fine like needle, man. Before I work hard and plant yam, and end up with yam not bigger than you leg, I sooner walk ‘round and look some more.”
Not everything is right for everybody.
And, I hear that Dog is still looking. And the next time that you see Dog and especially if you're eating, he’s sure to be looking at you; and especially if you’re eating yam. . . .
